Aha takes Traffic Coverage National and Builds in Automatic Voice Sharing with Twitter & Facebook

September 30th, 2009 No comments

TweetiePhoneSince we first hit the App Store last month, offering traffic coverage support for just a handful of cities, users from around the country have been asking when they could join in on the fun.

Well the team has been working feverishly, and I’m delighted to report that today we are going national, with specific emphasis on the top/worse traffic markets. That means that as of today places like LA and Washington DC have most of the major freeways and highways covered whereas a smaller market like Portland (my hometown—no favorites here) has the two major interstates covered.

We will continue to add more and more roads to our coverage map each week going forward and anyone can listen today to their city-wide traffic shoutroom to hear what other Aha Shouter’s are reporting about traffic on any road, as well as hear audio versions of all of the INRIX and ClearChannel traffic reports for your city.

Many of your were leaving such creative driver rants and caraoke shouts that we wanted to let you share them with people who don’t yet have iPhones. Thus, I’m excited to report that starting today users can automatically and instantly post links to their shouts to their Twitter account or Facebook wall. Now if you need to vent at the driver who just cut you off, all your Facebook friends can hear it before you even make it to the office.

With the new Facebook and Twitter integration, we let you customize which types of Shouts go to each. For example, you can send Traffic Shouts to Twitter, but opt to post “road rage” or Caraoke Shouts to Facebook. If you just want to post an update or make a comment for others, you can shout it to your local area shout room and have it also sent to your network of choice.

Posts are automatically created and populated with the type of Shout, your current location and speed (just for Traffic Shouts), any text you add during set-up, and most importantly a link to play the Shout.

We think this will not only be a lot of fun, but also help promote safer communication and keep peoples’ focus on the road (where it should be).

Happy shouting!

Aha update (v1.2) is now in the App Store, with a New Look!

September 23rd, 2009 2 comments

LogoBlogIt seems like only two weeks ago, but we’ve got another update that just hit the iTunes App Store.  The first thing you’ll probably notice is the new icon.  You might think that it “pops” a little more than the old one.  Myself … I like to believe that I can see a bit of my own vehicle in the center.  Regardless, we like it and hope you do to.

Now onto the more substantive changes.  We have the standard assortment of bug fixes (some minor stability issues, speed, etc.), as well as a rather important update to some error messaging within the registration flow (HINT: Usernames cannot contain special characters or spaces, and now the error message actually mentions that).

NewMainAnother significant change involves the layout of corridors in Traffic.  A lot of users had been wondering why the roads they cared enough about to manually add weren’t showing up front and center on the screen.

So we’ve swapped the Saved corridors with the Automatic corridors.  Now if you have a road or region you always want to track, it will be above the yellow line, and all automatic corridors will be below.

What’s that you say? You prefer automatic corridors to custom ones?  Easy enough to fix.  Just don’t create a custom corridor and your automatic corridors show up at the top.

There are some more changes too, but they are tied to some additional work we are doing on the back-end, so you won’t notice them right away.  So just stay tuned, or sniff around for some potential hints for what’s to come.

kanyeHello to all you Aha-sters out there (I still haven’t decided what to call you, but please send any suggestions to twitter.com/ahamobile).

Apologies to all those who were eagerly awaiting a weekly recap last week, but my fiancée wife frowned on my suggestion that we postpone our rehearsal dinner so I could crank out a quick post.  Hopefully I can satiate your desires with a double dose of S-O-W!

Aha update (v1.1) hits the App Store with iPod Controls

September 8th, 2009 No comments

controlOur first official update should now be hitting the iTunes App Store servers, so I’m here to tell you about it.

Not only do we have the standard assortment of bug fixes (some UI tweaks, some minor stability issues, etc.), but we were able to address one of the more frequent requests from a fair amount of users … iPod playback from within the app.

It turns out that I’m in the minority of iPhone owners, in that I typically use one of my many iPods for music, and there are a great many of you who like to use your iPhone for one of its original key functions (an iPod).

Unfortunately for those using the iPod app, whenever audio was triggered within Aha the iPod would stop, and users would need to exit Aha to get the music playing again.  Well, not anymore!  Aha and the iPod app are now playing nice with one another.

To activate the controls you have to do two things:

  • Make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of Aha (v1.1.0).
  • Enable controls from SETTINGS > My Preferences > Music Controller (ON/OFF).
  • Tap the small music note on the lower left corner of the Shout record button
  • Tap “i” to select some music to play

triggerAnd there you have it.  Music controls from within Aha!  Let us know what you think at twitter.com/ahamobile!

Server Updates + Shouts of the Week (9/04/09)

September 4th, 2009 No comments

photoHello again from the land of Aha.  I’ve got a fresh collection of shouts to showcase, as well as some exciting performance news.  First the performance news.

Not only are we always working on ways to improve the “client” (the actual app that downloads to  your iPhone) but we are also always working on improvements to our servers.  Earlier this week we rolled some changes to our server side that should not only give you faster startup times when you launch, but also a nice boost to the speed that content gets delivered from the servers to the client.  All in all you should be noticing that things are a little “snappier,” so to speak.

Anyway, said snappiness means it’s even easier to start the app and record some shouts.  So you, too, can be a featured player in our SHOUTS OF THE WEEK!  Users who have matched their Aha ID to their Twitter ID (or who provide their Twitter ID separately) are linked appropriately.
