After adding a slew of Mix stations last time around, we are back to a mix of individual podcast stations.
By request we are adding additional BBC and NPR programs, expanding the Adam Carolla network presence with two of his sister shows, and adding another show from the folks over at HowStuffWorks.
If you would like to make a suggestion for a new station, please contact us at feedback@ahamobile.com.
Adding:
Podcasts
- BBC: Newshour – Global news and analysis from the BBC World Service, twice a day, every day of the year.
- Daves of Thunder – Dave Dameshek and his pal David Feeney bring their brand of hooey & applesauce to the ACE Network. Where Murtaugh and Riggs left off, Dameshek and Feeney begin. When these two get together, NO subject is off-limits (except for some subjects)!
- NPR: Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me – NPR’s weekly current events quiz. Have a laugh and test your news knowledge while figuring out what’s real.
- Spider and the Henchman – John Salley teams up with sports columnist and screenwriter Kevin Hench to host a sports and entertainment themed podcast for Adam Carolla’s ACE Broadcasting Network.
- Tech Stuff – From the rise (and fall) of video game arcades to the great video game crash, this week is all about electronic entertainment. Join Jonathan and Chris as they explore the latest — and greatest — tech in TechStuff, a podcast from HowStuffWorks.com.

Having trouble keeping up on the latest episodes from a few of your favorite podcasts? Back in February I described how to use the My Feeds station to create a customized station with all of your favorite shows. We’ve gone a step further and created some special combo stations for you.
We also took this opportunity to add one of my all-time favorite podcasts… The Tony Kornheiser Show (my wife can’t fall asleep without it!).
If you would like to make a suggestion for a new combo station, please contact us at feedback@ahamobile.com.

Did you know that Aha Radio’s default setting is to automatically filter out anything that contains profane or explicit material? That may be the default…but we also like to give users a choice, which is why I’m here today to tell you all about the preference called Allow Explicit Content.
First, you may be wondering what we are actually filtering. Well…if someone drops an F-bomb during a bit on Stand-Up Comedy, uses “colorful” descriptors in a Driver Rant, or if a podcast simply carries the EXPLICIT label (like Adam Carolla or Nerdist), you won’t be able to hear that content in Aha.
In most of the stations the shouts in question will simply be held back. You won’t even know they are missing (unless you are looking for one of your own that you know contained colorful language). In the case of an EXPLICIT podcast, you’ll be able to add the preset but will also get a warning message the first time you attempt to play it.
To disable the filter all you have to do is enable the Allow Explicit Content preference. We can go back and forth on whether it makes more sense to toggle the filter off, or turn explicit on (we certainly did) but if you are hoping to have explicit material available in Aha Radio, make sure it says ON.
That’s all there is to it. Now you can listen to even more comedy, all podcasts, and any shouts that were potentially…colorful.

As I mentioned yesterday, an iOS4 specific update for Aha Radio was submitted to the App Store for approval, and I’m pleased to report that the updated version is NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD!
Just a quick reminder on what’s new.
- Background audio playback: keep listening to your favorite podcasts even after exiting the app (iOS 4.0 only). This release includes the fix for audio playback with iOS 4.0.
- For users without unlimited data plans, added a data usage tracker and the ability to reduce bandwidth consumption for podcast content within SETTINGS.
- App icon replaced with hi-res version.
- Other bug fixes and minor enhancements.
What all that means is that you can keep listening to your podcast stations, even after you exit the app. Also, if you have opted for the lowest data plan (200MBs) and are worried about your data usage, you can now keep track of it from within the SETTINGS area. There is also an optional setting to reduce consumption, but if you aren’t on the tiny plan we don’t recommend changing it. You’ll find that some of the rewind/resume options won’t work.
And of course, for those of you enjoying the new Retina Display, we’ve updated the app icon with a hi-res version.
Hope you all enjoy!

Aha Mobile
As just about all iPhone owners are aware, Apple released a major iOS update to coincide with the release of the new iPhone4. We tested against it with the SDK, but a playback issue snuck by us and some users have probably noticed that non-podcast content is getting cut off early. If you are still on iOS 3, or only listen to podcast stations, you have not been impacted.
I’m excited to report that we’ve submitted an update to the App Store for review, and not only does it resolve the playback issue, but it makes Aha Radio fully compatible with iOS4. Hello fast app switching and background audio!!! Once the update hits you’ll be able to continue listening to your podcast stations even after you exit the app. And don’t worry, we’ve made sure to streamline the background processes so that you don’t have to worry about it sapping your battery.
Stay tuned and be on the lookout for the little update badge on your App Store app.
